Mauritius: Passport, Visa and Other information

Passports

Everyone traveling to Mauritius must have a passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the end of travel. Mauritius does not recognize passports issued by Taiwan but special application can be made (contact us for details).

Visas

Visas are not required for visitors from the US, Canada, UK, the European Union, Australia and Japan all of whom may stay for up to 3 months. Citizens of other countries have varying requirements and length of stays (contact us for details). No charge is made for visas. All travelers must have a return (or onward) air ticket and proof of sufficient funds for the visit.

Customs

Arriving passengers may import 250g of tobacco products or 50 cigars; 1 litre of spirits and 2 litres of wine or beer; 250ml of eau de toilette and a small quantity of perfume for personal use. Vegetables, fruit, flowers, plants and seeds, firearms and ammunition must be declared upon arrival. Sugar cane may not be brought into the country.

Currency Exchange

As of this writing (December 2001) there are approximately 27 Mauritian rupees to US$1. The exchange rate is government set so all banks will provide the same rate. Keep your exchange paperwork as this will be needed to reconvert the rupees at the airport on your departure. This is one of the countries where travelers checks bring a better rate than cash….and use banks, rather than hotels for the best available rate. Banking hours are from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM weekdays and from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM on Saturdays. Most major credit cards are universally accepted.

Departure Tax

Everyone over the age of 2 must pay a departure tax of 300 rupees.
